To the rest of the world it is known as football but in Australia, we call it soccer.
As a multi-cultural nation, families from a range of different cultural heritages are waking up (really) early to cheer for their teams playing on the world stage for the prestigious world cup trophy.
Where Aussie Rules Football is the sport of our nation, soccer has established a strong following as well.
Soccer in South Australian Government Schools
Soccer has become a popular sport in South Australian government schools. Students can choose to play soccer as a co-curricular activity on a school team, or at select high schools, undertake soccer as a special interest program as part of their educational curriculum.
Special interest soccer programs
Special interest programs are available for students with a talent or passion for a particular subject area. These programs are usually a strong focus for the school and can range from providing opportunities for students at all levels to focusing on the elite. For entry into these programs a try-out and application process is normally required which differs from school to school depending on the program they are offering.
Many of these special interest programs have a connection with Football Federation of South Australia (which is affiliated with FIFA through the Football Federation of Australia) to deliver aspects of the training and coaching programs at the school.
The following South Australian government schools currently offer a special interest program in soccer:
|Underdale High School||Banksia Park International High School|
|Norwood Morialta High School||Henley High School|
|Roma Mitchell Secondary College||Mount Gambier High School|
